Saints vs. Chargers in London

The San Diego Chargers will play the New Orleans Saints in London in a National Football League contest in October, the San Diego Union-Tribune reported on Sunday.

The newspaper said the October 26 contest could be formally announced by the NFL in Glendale, Arizona, this week as part of the build-up to Super Bowl 42 next weekend.

"We want to go," Chargers president Dean Spanos told the Union-Tribune. "I'm cautiously optimistic."

According to the report, the Saints would be the 'home' team in London, sacrificing a game at the Superdome.

The NFL announced earlier this month that it would return to Britain for a regular-season game in 2008.

Last October, the NFL played its first regular-season game in London when the New York Giants beat the Miami Dolphins 13-10 at Wembley Stadium. The contest in heavy rain drew a crowd of more than 81,000.

The NFL decided in 2006 to stage a limited number of regular-season games outside the United States every year until 2011.
